After breakfast and a briefing in Moshi, drive to Rongai Gate (1,950m) for registration. Begin your trek through cultivated fields and pine forest, where you may spot colobus monkeys and birds. The trail is gentle and gradually ascends to Simba Camp (2,650m), your first overnight stop. Enjoy a hot meal and rest in your tent, surrounded by the tranquility of the northern slopes.
Leave the forest and enter moorland, with views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The trail is steady and offers opportunities to spot wildlife. After 5-6 hours of trekking, arrive at Second Cave Camp (3,450m), where you’ll enjoy panoramic views and a well-deserved meal. Acclimatization begins as you adjust to the higher altitude.
Continue your ascent through moorland and heather, with stunning views of the eastern ice fields. The trail is gradual but the altitude makes it challenging. After 4-5 hours, reach Kikelewa Camp (3,600m), your base for the night. Rest, hydrate, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Ascend steeply to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m), nestled beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak. The landscape is dramatic and offers excellent acclimatization. Spend the afternoon exploring the area or resting in preparation for the days ahead.
Cross the lunar desert of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, with breathtaking views of both peaks. The trail is long but gradual, leading to Kibo Hut (4,700m), your base for the summit attempt. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak.
Begin your summit attempt around midnight, climbing by headlamp through switchbacks and scree. Reach Gilman’s Point (5,685m) at sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement, take photos, and begin the descent to Kibo Hut for a short rest. Continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for your final night on the mountain. This is a long, rewarding day—expect to trek for 12-15 hours in total.
