After breakfast and a briefing in Moshi, drive to Marangu Gate (1,860m) for registration. Begin your trek through lush rainforest, where you may spot blue monkeys and a variety of birds. The trail is well-defined and gently ascends to Mandara Hut (2,700m), your first overnight stop. Enjoy a hot meal and rest in the comfort of the mountain hut, surrounded by the sounds of the forest.
Leave the rainforest and enter moorland, with views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail passes through open heath and giant lobelias, offering a unique landscape. After 5-7 hours of trekking, arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m), where you’ll enjoy panoramic views and a well-deserved meal. Acclimatization begins as you adjust to the higher altitude.
Continue your ascent through alpine desert, with stunning views of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trail is gradual but the altitude makes it challenging. After 5-7 hours, reach Kibo Hut (4,700m), your base for the summit attempt. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak.
Begin your summit attempt around midnight, climbing by headlamp through switchbacks and scree. Reach Gilman’s Point (5,685m) at sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement, take photos, and begin the descent to Kibo Hut for a short rest. Continue down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for your final night on the mountain. This is a long, rewarding day—expect to trek for 12-15 hours in total.
After breakfast, descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,860m), where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration. Reflect on your incredible achievement and the unforgettable memories made on Kilimanjaro’s Marangu Route.
